I have dreamt of working as a hairdresser

I HAVE DREAMT OF WORKING AS A HAIRDRESSER is a narrative about the burden of ethnicity, personal and collective loss, and the individual struggle for belonging and identity.

Hairdresser HabourThe safe habour for the illegal immigrants after 28 hours of an odyssey on the Mediterranean Sea

The story is about a young gipsy woman, who cannot achieve her dream of working as a hairdresser. Iva came to Germany together with her husband and settled. She is desperate to remain in the country. But after seven years she is afraid of a deportation. The fate of the young hairdresser Iva forms the documentary’s framework. At the end she and her family stay illegally.

We travel to Belgrade fingering out, where Iva would come back, if she has to leave Germany. The film’s middle part starts at Belgrade airport. You see the scare in the children's eyes when they arrive. The gypsy families have just been deported out of Germany, where they were only tolerated. The police came early in the morning and search their home with dogs.

From now on the adults exploit the waste on the landfill, collect paper, scavenge the street, polish shoes or sell on the flea market. The living at the margin of the society in the slums is often very unhygienic or even dangerous. School children become victims of right wing violent criminals. They have to work as street musicians, flower sellers, beggars or prostitutes. There is much resignation, and very less hope.
